LoL Champions
The first official League of Legends tournament held in Korea was the LoL Champions Spring in 2012. It was held three times a year (Spring, Summer, Winter) in a tournament format. Famous international teams were invited and the honor of being the inaugural champion went to MIG Blaze.

LoL Champions
Champions Winter 2012-2013 and Spring 2013 were played with 12 Korean teams divided into two groups. Top 4 teams from each group advanced to the tournament stage. Starting in Summer 2013, the format changed to a round of 16 group stage and the same format stayed until Summer 2014.

Full League System
Starting in 2015, the league’s name changed to League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK), transitioning from a tournament format to a full league system. The LCK switched to a two-split season (Spring and Summer) and only allowed one team per org. to participate. A promotion system was introduced.

Full League System
Since the beginning of the league, OGN has been the exclusive producer, but starting from the summer of 2016, SPOTV Games joined the broadcast and a dual production system was introduced. This arrangement stayed for about three years until Riot Games Korea took over productions of the LCK in 2019.

The LCK Era
After building a dedicated arena, the LoL PARK, in Jongno-gu, Seoul, in September 2018, Riot Games Korea began operating the LCK in 2019. The decision to produce and broadcast directly through large-scale investments made a lot more room for flexibility in terms of viewer feedback and convenience.

The LCK Era
While the COVID-19 pandemic suspended competitions in 2020, the LCK took advantage of esports’ ability to hold competitions online. The LCK was able to run the league without prolonged disruption by establishing an environment for online matches with teams participating from their own facilities.

Franchise Model
In 2021, the LCK became the fourth league to transition to a franchise league. Franchising eliminated relegation and guaranteed teams a more stable participation in the league. Teams were able to explore ways to monetize such as improving performance, expanding fan bases, and increasing revenue.
